2005 Chianti
£6.50 (£78.00)
  Montalbano Poggio al Pino
Simple, very well made Chianti from just outside the Medici town of Cerreto Guidi, close by Florence. Made by oenologist Stefano Parisi whose family have lived on this estate for generations. Full of ripe, crisp, cherry fruits.

2005 Assisi
£7.95 (£95.40)
  Rosso Sportoletti
Sangiovese with 30% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is one of Umbria's most approacable wines for francophiles. Aged in french oak it is softly textured with fresh, sweet fruit and a crisp finish.

2005 Morellino di Scansano
£8.95 (£107.40)
  Heba Fattoria di Magliano
Heba (the ancient name of the town of Magliano) is a blend of Sangiovese with 15% Syrah, given eight months in fine-grained, medium toast Allier oak barrels. An intense nose of cherry fruit, rich and savoury on the palate with ripe, warm fruit which in this vintage is fresher and more elegant.

2005 Caburnio
£9.25 (£111.00)
  Tenuta Monteti
Rated by Jancis Robinson a 'great-value Italian red', this Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante and Merlot blend from the southern Maremma is spicy and sweet, full and luscious, but with a savouriness and minerality that develops well on the finish.

2005 Capoposto
£9.95 (£119.40)
  Rosso Alberto Longo
Negroamaro, fermented and aged in stainless steel to retain its sweet, licorice flavoured, fruit. Almost Rhone like in style with its intense ripeness and crunchy acidity.

2004 Bolgheri Rosso
£10.95 (£131.40)
  Le Macchiole
Brilliant ruby colour, this Cabernet and Sangiovese blend exhibits aromas of red fruits, blueberries, blackberries, spices and light, well-integrated vanilla notes. Medium- bodied, it possesses sweet, ripe tannins, and a balanced, refreshed acidity.

2003 Nebbiolo d'Alba
£14.75 (£177.00)
  Il Cumot Bricco Maiolica
Deep in colour, and richly aromatic this is a fabulous expression of Nebbiolo with all the power of a baby Barolo.

2003 Primamateria
£14.75 (£177.00)
  Poggerino
Piero has excelled with this Sangiovese and Merlot blend from his Chianti vineyards, not only in terms of producing a wine of great quality, but also because he has reduced the price quite significantly. Lovely, ripe fruit and sweet tannins with subtle use of oak make this an immensely elegant, and very fine bottle.

2001 Chianti Classico
£16.95 (£203.40)
I Massi Riserva Il Colombaio di Cencio
Stunningly good Chianti. Given the full oak treatment, with ageing on the lees and battonage, it is full bodied with rich and ripe tannins and delicious fruit. This is a wine that really sings, even if in full baritone tones.

2000 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
£18.50 (£222.00)
  Bossona Riserva Dei
The 2000 Bossona has evolved into a silky, firm textured, sweet full-bodied Sangiovese with an impressive finish.

2005 Poggio Bestiale
£18.50 (£222.00)
Rosso della Maremma Fattoria di Magliano
Poggio Bestiale, named after the vineyard, is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, given eighteen months in new Alliers oak. Not just another international style, this is a wine which really expresses the character of the vineyard. Rich and full bodied with very fine sweet tannins and an elegance and texture which makes it one of the best value wines of Tuscany.

2004 Tassinaia
£19.25 (£231.00)
  Castello del Terriccio
While the Merlot initially appears more dominant in this excellent vintage, The Cabernet and Sangiovese follow through with remarkably focussed tannins. Ripe fruit, with soft, chewy tannins and very impressive length. A great Tassinaia.
